Women’s Studies Centre (WSC) was founded by prof. Elżbieta H. Oleksy at the University of Łódź in 1992.
Not only is it the first academic institution of this type in Poland but also the oldest women’s/gender studies centre in Central and Eastern Europe. Nowadays WSC functions within a structure of the Faculty of International and Political Studies.
Major activities at the WSC: » interdisciplinary academic research, » participation in international research projects (7th Framework Program of the European Union, Erasmus Mundus and Erasmus Lifelong Learning Programs, international cooperation on European and transatlantic levels), » didactic programs at MA level (International Gender Studies specialization and GEMMA), courses taught at BA level as well as tutorials for LLP – Erasmus and Erasmus Mundus students, and postgraduate programs (Gender Studies Postgraduate Program for Teachers – Policy of Equal Opportunities in Educational Process), » organization of international conferences, seminars and workshops, » active participation in Erasmus Teaching Staff Mobility program, » popularization of concepts of gender & equality, women’s rights and antidiscriminatory policies of the EU.
Numerous independent researchers from various faculties cooperate with the WSC. They represent such academic disciplines as American studies, media studies, English philology, cultural studies, philosophy, psychology, sociology and anthropology.
